Completely understand the different shades of hats in SEO; read the search engines' quality content guidelines and adhere to them as best you can. (that's White, Grey and Black Hat) 2. Concentrate on your on-site ranking factors; most importantly is your well-crafted content, then your optimizable web page components, internal navigation, naming conventions ... 3. Exercise keyphrase dynamicability, get rewarded for flexing your knowledge of the English language and learn how to enforce important keyphrases innovatively and intelligently (better explained in 5). 4. Strive for terminal uniqueness. Don't do anything like what your competitors do. Good search engine optimizers fabricate their own boxes to think themselves out of. A little marketing ingenuity can go a long way in the organic search engine results. 5. Understand your keyphrase markets, do lots of keyword search frequency tests. Pick a handful of keyphrases for your main "pot of gold" arenas but simultaneously expand your fishing nets to all the synonymous keyphrases and word variables, altered verb tenses, prefixes, suffixes, antonyms, acronyms, abrreviations etc. Doesn't hurt to know a little linguistics to throw in at tghe last minute iun a tough battle (lexicons, morphology etc.). Squabble on the top of the pile not in the result pages oblivion. Keep exceptional uniqueness always at the forefront of your web presentations. Watch what the others do, and learn from that, so that you can do it better. Good SEOers spot the weaknesses, they fill the holes. Got to be an all-round thinker.

It is risky to upgrade a live site without testing the upgrade process first. So before upgrading the live site you need to set up a test site which is as close as possible to the configuration of your live site, then test the upgrade on that. When you are happy with the process you can apply it to the live site (having taken a fresh backup of the live site first, of course). For some basic information on patching and migrating, see Upgrading and Migrating FAQs and Upgrade Instructions. You can also use a Joomla! extension to automate the process of loading version updates. See Update Manager for Joomla! for more information. Review the release notes for the new version.

For the most recent upgrade instructions, always check http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.5_fr ... 5x_version And for anything specific to a release, be sure to also check the release announcement itself. This always contains the upgrade instructions as well.

Topic : Migrating from 1.0.x to 1.5.x

The migration from Joomla! 1.0 to 1.5 is handled for the most part automatically in two stages. The first stage is the export migration component for Joomla! 1.0 and the second stage is the import or migration phase of the Joomla! 1.5 installer. The system is automated due to a large number of changes that make data slightly incompatible between Joomla! 1.0 and 1.5, such as parameters for menus and content items. Whilst it is still possible to use a database dump to migrate, this is not advised as there will be data loss. This page aims to detail how to migrate from Joomla! 1.0 to Joomla! 1.5 with as much ease as possible.

Simple Image Gallery Plugin can do this

You put pictures in a dirctory like /images/stories/Sara-Eric-3.

You instert {gallery}Sara-Eric-3{/gallery} into an article and it displays all the pictures

in that directory/gallery when you display the article.

You may set picture and thumbnail sizes in the configuration for Simple Image Gallery.

Topic : 10 ways Not to promote your site.

Once you've built your masterpiece, you have to spread the word. Submitting your Web site to search engines, directories and related sites is critical to success. The real Web-savvy companies have whole teams of geeks who spend their days figuring out how to get better rankings in search engines.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of fools' gold, bad advice and even downright scams in the Web site promotion field. If you go about promoting your site the wrong way, you can actually hurt traffic instead of helping to build it. Here are 10 things you should definitely not do, no matter how tempting some spam message makes it sound:
1 - Spam Not!
2 - Don't shell out big for submission services.
3 - Don't waste time on the flotsam and jetsam of the Web.
4 - Don't rush through your Yahoo submission.
5 - Never submit your site until it's open for business.
6 - Don't forget to integrate your URL into your business.
7 - Don't mess with black magic.
8 - Don't put anything in your Web site directory that you don't want the public to see.
9 - Don't neglect to measure your traffic.
10 - When you're finished, don't stop!

Topic : Migrating from 1.0.x to 1.5.x

Step 1: Downloading the Migrator component and installing it into your 1.0 instance

The latest version of the migrator component exists at the Pasamio Project's FRS site. At the time of writing the latest release is Migrator 1.4. Download the Migrator component to your system and then install it into the 1.0 install. This is done like any normal component install. There will be a Migrator entry in the Component menu option where you can access the Migrator.

Step 2: Installing Third Party Migrator plugins

The Migration system only handles the core system in its migration which means that if you want to include third party extension data from other tables you will have to install migrator plugins to handle the migration of this data. There are two types of plugins that are used: an "SQL" plugin which is a plain text SQL file and an "ETL" Plugin which is a bit of PHP that tells the migrator how to handle the data stored in tables (or in configuration files). This is done by selecting "Add Third Party Migrators", and then locating the plugin you wish to install and uploading the file. SQL files will be prepended to the output automatically and ETL plugins will be executed automatically. You can view a list of ETL plugins by clicking "List Plugins" in the main screen. You can also upload ETL plugins to the "plugins" directory in the "/administrator/components/com_migrator" directory in your Joomla! site.

The JED lists third party migrator ETL plugins.

Step 3: Creating the Migration SQL File

Once you have installed any third party migrator plugins, you can select the "Create Migration SQL file" to begin the creation process. The system is designed to build an SQL file without causing a timeout on the server, so you may notice that the page automatically refreshes and displays status information. Eventually it will display a notification that the process has been completed and the SQL file will be available for download. Part of the SQL file generation involves the alteration of various fields to make them compatible with changes made in Joomla! 1.5, including the rewriting of mosimage tags.

Step 4: Installing Joomla! 1.5

Note: Create your new Joomla! 1.5 install in a separate directory and database to your existing install (or different prefix if you cannot create a new database). You cannot extract over the top of your 1.0 install, you have to create a new Joomla! 1.5 site. Alternatively, move your 1.0 install to a safe location and install into the empty directory 1.0 will have created. It is not a very good idea to install a new Joomla! 1.5 site over the top of your existing 1.0 site, it is better to test things in a seperate directory and progress from there.

If you can't install Joomla!, or Joomla! has already been installed, you can use the Migration Assistant in your 1.5 site. Note that beyond itself it will wipe out the 1.5 site's database back to a clean install and then do the migration. Any information that is in the 1.5 sites database will be deleted. The migration assistant is available at the same place as the Migrator, the latest version is Migration Assistant 1.5.2. There may be a later version, so check Pasamio Project's FRS site for any updates.

If you haven't done so already, take a full back up of your 1.0 site, including all of the filesystem and the database. Do not proceed without a backup.

The last phase of the migration is the installation of a new Joomla! 1.5 site. You need to install '1.5 into a completely new directory, you should keep this separate to your 1.0 directory. If you just unzip over the top of your existing 1.0 site, you will have issues with it finding an invalid copy of the configuration.php" file, so either move your original install or create a new directory. Complete the initial steps of the installation as per a normal installation. In the final step where you are prompted for the site name you are given the opportunity to initiate the migration process. Migration requires the generated SQL file to complete its operation, which might need to be uploaded to your new 1.5 site, there are two options for doing this:

  • HTTP Upload
  • FTP/SCP Upload

The first method, HTTP upload, is best for smaller SQL files that will fit within the upload limits of PHP. The alternative is to upload a file using either FTP, SCP or some other method of file transfer that your hosting provider offers. This is useful for larger SQL files that would normally not be permitted by PHP. To use the HTTP method, simply select the file like a normal component installation. To use the alternative upload method, upload the files into the installation/sql/migration folder and rename the file to be called "migrate.sql". If for some reason the migration fails you will need to reupload the SQL file for both methods, HTTP and FTP/SCP, as the file is altered through the migration process. The prefix for all migration dumps is "jos_", this should be placed into the provided text box. Once migration has been completed, enter in a site name (the site name cannot be migrated for technical reasons) and finish the installation.

Just add in each override

JPlugin::loadLanguage( 'tpl_nameoftemplate' );

Then add the strings in the en-GB.tpl_nameoftemplate.ini file frontend file.

Enjoy !

Topic : How to Create an Attractive, User Friendly Web Site

There are few things more important on the web than "usability," because the Internet is an interactive space and not a one-way street. You want to improve the visitor's experience, make choices simple, be pleasing to the eye and not overuse the flashy add-on du jour. In addition, your site will tell visitors a lot about your company just from the way it looks, loads and functions, before they even read a single word. The importance of creating an attractive, user-friendly website simply cannot be overstated.

For reasons that are almost too numerous to list - marketing, sales, psychology, trust building, perceived professionalism, etc. - the way your website is experienced by users should be foremost in your mind. The following eight important reminders will get you going in the right direction, but you're the one who knows your customers (or should) so the finer points of personalization and "character" are up to you.

1. The importance of focus. You need to think like your visitors do. This is key to your site's success. Your customers simply want to find what they need, make the payment and get back to real life (jobs, family, tennis, whatever). If you can make their lives a bit simpler and easier, they'll reward you for it. If, on the other hand, you make their lives more complicated, they'll "surf away" and stay away.

2. The importance of understanding the medium. You are not creating a slideshow, a YouTube video, a TV commercial or a PowerPoint presentation. You are building a website for commercial purposes. You need to provide easy, simple, clear navigation on every page, since you never know how people will link to your site and what they will see first. Visitors to your site, no matter how hard you try, will not always go where you would like them to go, or do what you want them to do. Remember that, and give them a few tools to move around the site, like a sitemap and/or internal search engine.

3. The importance of non-aggression. Most Internet users, especially experience ones, like to stay in control of their movements. Research suggest that your first-time visitors are "hunting," not "deciding," so do not make unnecessary demands for clicking, scrolling, resizing windows or anything else. Neither should you put up any roadblocks that will slow down their hunting, like time-consuming "Flash and splash screens."

4. The importance of reduced load times. Tied into #3 is the notion of your site's real and perceived "speed." Carefully consider each page element and make each one earn its place, based on functionality, not "wow" value. Keep graphic file sizes small and do whatever else you need to do to have a fast-loading, easy to use site.

5. The importance of customer needs: Define all the kinds of people you expect to visit your site and consider what they'll be looking for. Ensure that the navigation design helps the greatest number of people to find the most popular items in the least amount of time. Don't "bury" essential information so that visitors have to dig down two or three levels to find it.

6. The importance of simplicity. Flash is powerful tool, especially helpful in demonstrating things that are difficult to describe in words, but it is so pathetically overused that it has turned people off. It can be a huge distraction, too, since animation and bright (moving) colors are exceptionally hard for our eyes to ignore even when our brains want to.

7. The importance of proportionality. Although Javascript is used on some sites to display all the links to the other pages, there is really no reason to do this when simple, straightforward, low-overhead HTML works fine. When you employ a "new, improved" or more complex means of doing something - anything - you have to take into account browser compatibilities, possible bugs and user resistance. Don't use more technology than it takes to accomplish something cleanly, clearly and consistently.

8. The importance of avoiding surprises. You should use the expected, usual and standard placements for expected, usual and standard site elements. Site navigation is not something you want to be too creative with, as it needs to be immediately understandable and usable. Such consistency across the World Wide Web is actually a good thing, as it tends to make people's lives a bit easier when they feel they are in "familiar territory." Generally speaking, your various website components should look and work as people think they're supposed to.

To borrow from Oscar Wilde, consider also the importance of being earnest. More specifically, you want to be seen as being earnest, meaning that you want every visitor to understand, implicitly if possible but explicitly if necessary, that you are doing everything possible to make their site visit a simple, straightforward experience. "No muss, no fuss" is a great slogan to remember.

Therefore, rather than get caught up in profound design metaphors or using your bandwidth to display every possible website trick and/or treat, you should focus on making your site into a solution for your customers. Make it easy for them to do what they need to do and then get on with their lives. Perhaps the most important thing you can give a site visitor, then, is respect and appreciation.

Topic : 5 Top Search Engines Optimisations Tips

Search Engine Optimisation is often considered a black art - but there are some straightforward Search Engine Optimisation techniques that can make a difference.

SEO Tip 1. Newsletters and articles. A powerful Website Optimisation technique that assists Search Engine Optimisation is to offer articles and informative writing to e-zine publishers. Links often stay live in archives for years, maintaining your website optimisation for searches.

SEO Tip 2. Multiple Domains. Search Engine Optimisation can be enhanced by having multiple domains if you have a range of topics that could justify their own website. Search Engine Optimisation can result in the listing of only one page per domain for any given search. A good website optimisation tip is that you can get more directory listings by having more domains which improves your overall website optimisation.

SEO Tip 3. Article Exchanges. Article exchanges are similar to link exchanges, only much more powerful, so great for Search Engine Optimisation. Giving and receiving high quality links can really help with your Search Engine Optimisation.

SEO Tip 4. Titles For Links. A top Search Engine Optimisation tip is to title links using keywords and phrases as some search engines figure this into their relevancy for a page. This will help to maximize your website optimisation.

SEO Tip 5. Site map. Large sites need a site map to maximise Website Optimisation, linked to and from every page on the site. A site map is an excellent Search Engine Optimisation tool. It enables search engine robots to locate every page in just two clicks. The navigation bar can also act as a site map proving a useful Search Engine Optimisation technique on small sites.
